Its been exactly a week since I finished the above referenced book for Arcadia Publishing. I overnighted the package on Thursday afternoon but I didnt actually finish the Acknowledgement and Introduction sections until just about this time last Tuesday. It was mentally exhausting but I know it was worth it. I’m especially glad of the quality time I’ve been able to share with my dad since this project started last summer.
When I realized that I had made a mistake with the layout and there was no room as it was for a Bibliography I decided to make some changes. This was done at the last minute. I decided to cut the below two photos and their accompanying captions from the “Looking Ahead” chapter.
211- Prior to the I-279 highway one of the main arteries coming into the city was Troy Hill Road connecting with East Ohio Street. This photo was taken from the Heinz plant in the mid 1980s. Notice the Schiller School in the background on the left. This Art Deco style building was completed in 1939. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. (Edward W. Yanosko)

Here are a few more that didnt make the cut. Probably the most difficult part of the process was having to cut pictures. We probably accumulated twice the number of pictures that we were allowed to use, not to mention the dozens of photos we looked at and then passed on without even scanning.
The bottom two pictures are of the same man. His name was Walt and he used to rent a room off of my great grandmother. She owned a small general store along Madison Avenue. Along with the normal sales of cigars, flour, candy, etc she also ran an illegal numbers game out of the store. Supposedly Walt actually stepped up a few times and took the heat when the cops felt the need to hassle them.

The book signing at the Penn Brewery went so well that we have scheduled a second one. The next one will be December 5th at Billy’s Bistro in Troy Hill from 6-9pm.
Probably the coolest thing so far is having complete strangers come up to us and thank us for writing the book. That is tied with the ultra cool fact that I got to spend so much quality time with my dad writing this book and compiling the stories and pictures.
